The Army supplied a lawyer hundreds of miles away, one that was already overworked and did not have the time or resources to defend Sgt. Burley.
After the conviction it became apparent to his parents that they needed to obtain legal help other than that offered by the military. A search on the internet came up with a website of a Scott Sacharow who advertised an expertise in Military law.
Mr. Sacharow was very helpful in the beginning. lending a much needed ear. Things seemed to be moving forward. A witness was found who had heard the 3 privates conspire to pen the charges on their innocent sargeant. After sending Sacharow $2,700, he asked for $6,000.00 more to proceed with a habeas corpus. This money was borrowed and mailed off to him on September 24th express mail. The check was signed by Scott Sacharow and a Stanley Sacharow of 70 Valley Forge Drive in East New Brunswick, NJ on September 26th and then Scott Sachrow became unreachable. For weeks as Sgt. Burley's case was in limbo calls from the Army's lawyer, Sgt. Burley and his parents went forth: all unanswered by Scott Sacharow. After 3 weeks a lady finally answered Scott Sacharow's cell phone and she said that Scott was hurt playing ball, having broken a leg and hurting his back, he was heavily medicated and should soon be able to talk and she knew he still wanted the case. Letters were sent to him; they were unanswered, it wasn't until December 11th that Scott finally called and his story was that he had been hit by a car while changing a flat tire on the interstate. As of this date he has not returned the $6,000.00. His websites on the internet have been dismantled.
